About John Kintner Starr

Dr. John K. Starr is an orthopaedic surgeon at Sibley Memorial Hospital. He practices out of Washington Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, located in Sibley Memorial Hospital’s Medical Building and Chevy Chase, MD. He is affiliated with Sibley Memorial Hospital, Suburban Hospital, Children’s National Medical Center, Washington Hospital Center and George Washington University Hospital. Dr. Starr has an expertise in complex spinal surgery and reconstruction, as well as complex deformity, revision reconstruction, spinal trauma and tumors.  

Dr. Starr earned his medical degree from State University of New York at Buffalo. He completed a general surgery residency at Millard Fillmore Hospitals, followed by an orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Starr also completed a fellowship in the spinal cord injury unit and adult spinal surgery at the Jackson Memorial Hospital and a fellowship in pediatric reconstruction and scoliosis at the Miami Children’s Hospital. Dr. Starr was previously the orthopaedic director of spinal surgery at George Washington University, as well as an assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery. 

Dr. Starr is a member of various scientific societies. In the past, Dr. Starr has served an advisory role for the National Institutes of Health and the Food and Drug Administration, as well as served on the Panel of Examiners for the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS) and chaired the spine panel for oral examinations for the ABOS.

Dr. Starr has contributed to numerous publications and given lectures and presentations on his research interests, including spinal fixation, spinal trauma care and complex tumor resection and reconstruction.
