Background

Dr. Napolitano chairs the Department of Pediatric Medicine at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital. He joined the All Children's Hospital neonatology program in 1988 and serves as senior neonatologist.

Dr. Napolitano is the medical director of the ACH Neonatal and Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team, which brings patients to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital. In 2009, he was also named medical director for the 32-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Sarasota Memorial Hospital through its affiliation with All Children's Specialty Physicians and Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital. He is a member of the faculty of the All Children's Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine pediatric residency program.

After receiving his medical degree from the University of Brussels, Dr. Napolitano completed his pediatric residency and neonatology fellowship at the Medical College of Virginia, where he was an attending neonatologist and assistant professor of pediatrics before joining ACH. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the sections of Perinatal Pediatrics and Transport Medicine. He has served as a member and past president of the Florida Society of Neonatology.

Dr. Napolitano's clinical research interests include the treatment of persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn; he directed All Children's participation in the early multicenter trials of nitric oxide therapy for this condition. He is engaged in studies of nutrition in the premature infant and research on neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), a constellation of symptoms in newborns exposed to narcotics in utero. He serves on a Florida State Collaborative to develop guidelines for the management of infants with NAS.

As an advocate for family-centered care, Dr. Napolitano established a NICU Parent Advisory Committee at All Children's Hospital. He has served as a member or vice chair of numerous ACH staff committees.

Dr. Napolitano has been honored by the State of Florida EMS, the Florida Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Pinellas County and Tampa Bay March of Dimes,
