About Us
The Johns Hopkins Medicine Diabetes Prevention and Education Program (DPEP) is home to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) and the American Diabetes Association-recognized Diabetes Self-Management Training (DSMT) programs. Together at the Johns Hopkins Health System Office of Population Health (OPH), we strive towards a better, healthier community by preventing diabetes onset, and provide an evidence-based foundation to empower people with diabetes to navigate self-management decisions and activities.
In 2019, the Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM) and the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) were awarded funding from the Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission (HSCRC) to expand both DPP and DSMT programs throughout Maryland. This collaboration forms the Baltimore Metropolitan Diabetes Regional Partnership (BMDRP), with an aim to address diabetes prevention and diabetes self-management in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Howard County, Montgomery County and throughout Maryland.
There are seventeen zip codes within Baltimore City that were identified to have a high prevalence of risk factors for type 2 diabetes. JHM DPEP is rapidly expanding the DPP program in these areas, offering in-person or Zoom classes to encourage healthy habits and lifestyle change resources to the communities.
For patients living with diabetes, JHM DPEP is proud be expanding the Diabetes Self- Management Training (DSMT) clinical service throughout the Maryland region. Our Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (CDCES) are highly trained clinicians providing personalized consultation to help patients learn about diabetes management, meeting annual A1C goals, medication management, and navigating life transitions with diabetes care and beyond.
