Mary Brown, MPH, CHEP, CEM
Director of Emergency Management
Mary Brown is the director for the Johns Hopkins Hospital Office of Emergency Management (JHHOEM). She also is an Emergency Management Advisor to the Johns Hopkins Biocontainment Unit (BCU), a federally funded special pathogens treatment center. In late February/early March 2020, she led the first activation of the BCU for COVID-19. As the pandemic progressed, she served in various roles of the JHH Incident Command Center including Incident Commander, Operations Chief, and Planning Chief. Further notable pandemic achievements include leading the launch of both the first COVID-19 testing service and COVID-19 vaccine clinic for JHH.
Over the course of her career, Mary has responded to over 35 emergencies including infectious disease events (COVID-19 & measles), internal facilities emergencies (power outages & floods), supply chain disruptions, and security events. In addition, she has participated in 20+ exercises being the master controller for several of these. To date, she has led JHHOEM through two successful triannual Joint Commission surveys where emergency management received perfect assessments.
Mary graduated magna cum laude from Ashland University with a degree in biology with a concentration in forensics. She also holds a master’s degree in public health and a certificate in public health preparedness from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Additionally, she earned the designations of both Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) and Certified Healthcare Emergency Professional (CHEP). Outside the office, Mary is an avid traveler and has whitewater rafted through Costa Rica; experienced the northern lights in Iceland; and walked 160 miles along the Camino de Santiago in Spain.
