Media Advisory: Johns Hopkins Medicine’s A Woman’s Journey Hosts 30th Anniversary of Health Education Program

WHAT: A Woman’s Journey will host its 30th annual in-person event in November, with Johns Hopkins Medicine experts sharing the latest medical and health care advances across many topics. Johns Hopkins physicians will discuss insights on osteoporosis, the gut microbiome, brain health and more in breakout sessions. This event is designed to inform women about medical conditions to help them improve the health and wellness of themselves and their families.
This event also features several special keynote speakers, including April Simpkins (author, National Alliance on Mental Illness ambassador and 988 helpline partner), who will talk about the loss of her daughter, Miss USA 2019, and broadening awareness of mental illness. During a closing session, Johns Hopkins radiologist Elliot Fishman, M.D., will discuss the role of artificial intelligence in early diagnosis of disease. Kelly Geer Ripken, national chair of A Woman’s Journey, and Redonda Miller, M.D., M.B.A., president of The Johns Hopkins Hospital, will also speak at the event.
Breakout sessions led by Johns Hopkins experts will cover the following medical topics.
PRESENTATIONS INCLUDE:
- Marisa Clifton, M.D., will talk about the underlying causes and symptoms of urinary tract infections, which are the most prevalent infections among U.S. women, as well as treatment options and pelvic health practices.
- Charlene Gamaldo, M.D., will address sleep disorders that women often encounter, their relationship to other diseases and new treatments for getting a good night’s sleep.
- Dimitrios Kapogiannis, M.D., will share the impact of weight on brain health and the effectiveness of intermittent fasting to reduce risks.
- Sabra Lewsey, M.D., M.P.H., will discuss the latest evidence about heart disease in women, which is the leading cause of death in American women, and ways to improve heart health.
- Myriam Lucia Vega Gonzalez, M.D., M.P.H., will review unique skins characteristics that affect women of color, such as excessive scarring, rosacea and changes in melanin.
- Kendall Moseley, M.D., will share what science currently reveals about osteoporosis, and advances in addressing the cause of falls and fractures among women.
- Jessica Queen, M.D., Ph.D., will explain the relationship between the gut microbiome and immune health and disease, such as colon cancer.
- Wen Shen, M.D., will talk about the complications of losing estrogen during menopause, including heart disease, osteoporosis, decreased memory and other conditions that affect an average of one-third of a women’s life expectancy.
