National Trauma Survivors Day
05/08/2023
Who: Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center
What: National Trauma Survivors Day (May 17) is a day to honor those who have survived traumatic injuries, and to recognize the strength and courage they have shown in the healing process.
On this day, we will welcome and pay tribute to two of our recent trauma patients: Sierra Cave and Craig Maltese.
Sierra Cave is a mixed martial arts (MMA) athlete who was in a head-on collision last September. She suffered multiple rib fractures, lacerations on her spleen and liver, and fractures in her leg, ankle and hand. The trauma team in our emergency department stabilized and treated her upon arrival.
After being transferred to the surgical intensive care unit (SICU), Sierra became unstable and was taken to the operating room. There, measures were taken to stop the bleeding in her abdominal cavity. Over the course of her hospitalization (approximately 60 days), she would return to the OR four more times for various procedures. She has made a full recovery and currently resides in Dundalk, Md.
Craig Maltese was brought to our emergency department last April, when he was struck by a vehicle while riding his motorized scooter. He suffered multiple brain hemorrhages and fractures of the neck and spine. Once stabilized, Craig was transferred to the SICU, where he spent 23 days recovering from his injuries.
Sierra and Craig, as well as members of their health care team, will be available for interviews before and after the event.
