St. Petersburg, Fla. – August 3, 2021 – Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital’s president, Alicia Schulhof, M.H.A., F.A.C.H.E., just marked one-year at the #1 children’s hospital on Florida’s West Coast. Schulhof, who has four children of her own, arrived at Johns Hopkins All Children’s at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic affected everything from patient volumes, to finances and staffing challenges. In the past year, she’s gained valuable insight into the patient experience and staff’s work, rounding the hospital at all hours and even spending the night to better understand operations.

“I wanted to experience the environment as a family member and spend time with both our day and night shift teams,” Schulhof said. “I’m awed by how hard these team members have been working day in and day out, all while responding to a global pandemic, so my top priority has been to focus on caring for our staff.”

Schulhof has continued to work with the team on wellbeing resources, as well as actively working on recruitment, retention and identifying long-term solutions to staffing. Some of the recruiting efforts have paid off. Since Schulhof started, the hospital hired new medical directors for the Maternal, Fetal & Neonatal Institute and the Cancer & Blood Disorders Institute as well as a new chief financial officer, chief operating officer and many other roles throughout the organization.

Under her leadership, the hospital also remained laser-focused on quality and safety outcomes receiving several recognitions including, The Leapfrog Group, a national not-for-profit patient safety and quality organization, naming the hospital as one of only eight top children’s hospitals in the country. The hospital also earned high marks on a triennial survey by The Joint Commission, was named a U.S. News & World Report best children’s hospital and received the American College of Surgeons designation as a Level 1 Children’s Surgery Center, a verification of excellence that is held by fewer than 50 children’s hospitals in the U.S.

“This incredible team laid much of this groundwork before my arrival, and I remain extremely proud of how everyone came together to accomplish so many of these honors and recognitions,” said Schulhof. “What I will continue to do is shine a light on the work of my outstanding colleagues and work with our teams and our communities to begin charting our path forward to the next 10 years.”

Schulhof says she will continue to focus on the organization’s strategic plan – envisioning to becoming the premier clinical and academic pediatric health system in the Southeastern United States by 2033.
