A Johns Hopkins lung cancer doctor will be honored by the Baltimore Orioles as a Birdland Community Hero during the team’s game at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Julie Brahmer, M.D., is the director of the thoracic oncology program and associate professor of oncology at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, was nominated for the award by LUNGevity, a lung cancer-focused nonprofit association.

Brahmer will be honored on Saturday, September 15, during the Orioles game against the Chicago White Sox, with an in-game ceremony at the conclusion of the fifth inning.

The Orioles’ Birdland Community Heroes program recognizes community heroes who inspire others through charity and community service. The team will be making a $2,500 donation to LUNGevity

“You have exemplified this spirit through the work and service you have provided to our community and we would like to recognize you during the game,” the Orioles wrote in a letter to Brahmer.

Lung cancer, mainly caused by smoking, is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide, according to a recent report by the World Health Organization's cancer research agency. The report said 2.1 million new cases of lung cancer are expected to be diagnosed this year.

Brahmer is the co-principal investigator on the Johns Hopkins National Clinical Trials Network and is using pioneering immunotherapy techniques to treat the rising number of nonsmoking women who develop lung cancer.
