The Dana Center for Preventive Ophthalmology was founded in 1979 by Alfred Sommer, M.D., to lead global and domestic research on blindness prevention. It is the only World Health Organization collaborating center in the United States. Sommer assembled a team of experts in ophthalmology, epidemiology, biostatistics and operations research to focus on reducing avoidable visual disability.

Currently led by Allen Eghrari, M.D., the center drives research and trains future leaders in the fight against unnecessary blindness.
