Carl Kupfer and Michael Chiang

Carl Kupfer
In January 1970, Wilmer Eye Institute alumnus Carl Kupfer, M.D. was appointed the inaugural director of the National Eye Institute. Kupfer’s research at Wilmer led to the discovery of the first pharmacological treatment of retinoblastoma by administering intravenous nitrogen mustard.
Today, more than 50 years later, another Wilmer alumnus, Michael Chiang, M.D., heads the organization, whose mission is to safeguard and sustain the vision of all Americans.
