Continuing a Legacy of Excellence

Dr. EngLandon King presented a medallion to John Eng, recipient of the inaugural Bronwyn Jones, M.D. Professorship.

Faculty and friends of Johns Hopkins Radiology came together in July to honor a pioneer in the field during the dedication of the Bronwyn Jones, M.D. Professorship in Radiology and the installation of its first recipient, John Eng, at the William H. Welch Medical Library.

Bronwyn Jones was a trailblazer. A distinguished gastrointestinal radiologist, she became the first female full professor of radiology at Johns Hopkins. This pioneering legacy continued even after her retirement as she established the professorship — the first named for a female radiology faculty member — to support a diagnostic faculty member who embodies the Johns Hopkins mission of education, research and clinical care.

Born in Australia, Jones came to Johns Hopkins in 1981. During her distinguished career, her work was published in three books and more than 115 papers. A well-known gastrointestinal radiologist, she served as director of the Johns Hopkins Swallowing Center and was a founding member and past president of the Dysphagia Research Society and the Society of Gastrointestinal Radiologists. She remained active after her retirement in 2015. Although Jones died in 2022, her dedication to excellence continues to inspire.

The inaugural recipient of the Bronwyn Jones Professorship, John Eng, is vice chair for faculty academic development. Eng’s journey at Johns Hopkins began as a resident. Since completing his residency and fellowship at Johns Hopkins, he has made significant contributions, becoming an expert in the statistical analysis of diagnostic radiology tests and clinical informatics.

Eng collaborates widely with other departments, publishing joint work on pulmonary embolism, contrast-induced nephropathy, cardiac MRI and more.

In addition, he is a leader in diagnostic radiology, having held leadership positions in national radiology organizations, including serving as past president of the Association of Academic Radiology.

The endowment of the Bronwyn Jones Professorship will support Eng’s work, continuing Jones’ legacy of excellence on behalf of the patients we serve.
