Ever wondered how hospital leaders make decisions while facing a public health emergency? How about the precise training involved in eye surgery?

Last spring, members of the Johns Hopkins Medicine Dean’s Council, an emeritus group of former medicine trustees who advise the dean, got a behind-the-scenes look at innovative programs at The Johns Hopkins Hospital as part of “Live the Mission.”

First was a trip to the biocontainment unit led by Lisa Maragakis, the senior director of infection prevention for the Johns Hopkins Health System. The experience placed members of the Dean’s Council in the shoes of Johns Hopkins leaders as they responded to the potential of a new pandemic threat.

The Dean’s Council also stopped by the Center for Excellence for Ophthalmic Surgical Education and Training (OphSET), where Shameema Sikder, the center’s director, invited them to test drive the cutting-edge technology the Wilmer Eye Institute is using for surgical education.
