Family, friends, colleagues and mentors gathered recently to celebrate the Johns Hopkins Department of Radiology’s residency class of 2024. The ceremony was held at the Four Seasons Baltimore.

Dr. Karen Horton, chair of the Department of Radiology, addressed the esteemed graduates in her welcoming remarks.

She first thanked their family and friends – all those who have supported them on their journeys – noting, “It takes a village to make a radiologist.”

She also looked back fondly on her time as a resident at Johns Hopkins. She had no way of knowing it then, as she sat in the same spot as this year’s graduates, but she would go on to lead that very residency program and, eventually, the entire department.

Looking over the nine smiling graduates, Dr. Horton praised them for their strength and resiliency. They had arrived as fresh-faced new residents just months before the COVID-19 pandemic.

“You are the true COVID residents,” Dr. Horton noted, adding that their experience in a time of crisis will only serve to strengthen them as physicians.

While she encouraged the graduates to work hard, she also implored them to remain a part of the wider world around them.

“Don’t forget to look up at the opportunities that will present themselves,” she said, advising, “The days are long, but the years fly by.”

Dr. Erin Gomez, director of the Diagnostic Radiology residency program, also addressed the graduates before presenting them with their certificates.

Beaming with pride as she looked at the graduating residents, Dr. Gomez thanked them for their hard work, dedication and commitment to patients.

“I could not think of a more perfect, talented and poised group to represent Johns Hopkins Radiology,” she said.
