Innovation in Tumor Surgery

Johns Hopkins neurosurgeon Allan Belzberg has been honored by the Children’s Tumor Foundation with its 2022 Innovation in Medicine Award for his development of new surgical approaches to remove schwannoma, neurofibroma and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors. Belzberg is on the core team of the Johns Hopkins Comprehensive Neurofibromatosis Center, which provides complete interdisciplinary care to both children and adults with neurofibromatosis — a group of genetic disorders that cause tumors to form on nerve tissue.

“I can think of only three NF centers in the world that provide what we are providing — the sheer depth of the bench, some 50 people, all at the top of their various fields, completely dedicated to treating NF,” he says.
