Swiss cheese bones could be a real pain in your back. Cell researcher Xu Cao found that perforations like these in the bones that make up our spines could be the cause of many cases of back pain. These small holes allow nerves and blood vessels to grow where they shouldn’t registering pain as we move. Cao hopes to use this information to find ways to stop low back pain.
