How can a small bunch of cells develop into a structure as complex as the human eye? It takes the careful coordination of genes being turned off and on at just the right time and place to develop the vast variety of cells and structures that allow us to see. To understand how these structures are built, a collaborative Johns Hopkins Medicine research team tracked the cells in a developing mouse eye. Using color to represent different moments in time, the researchers are able to study what genetic combinations are needed throughout development.
