Applications for Neurology PGY 2 beginning July 2024 will be accepted starting September 7, 2022. All applications must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). 

The residency selection committee will begin reviewing applications starting September 28, 2022. We will begin contacting prospective candidates via email regarding interviews by mid to late October. We encourage applicants to check email daily during the application review period. Once the interview slots are filled, the committee will keep a handful of applications on a waitlist.

Interviews

Interviews will be conducted virtually via Zoom. We will have five (7) interview dates this year, all on Thursdays:

• November 3, 10, 17
• December 1, 8, 15
• January 5

PGY1: General Internal Medicine Preliminary Year Training Tracks

Adult Neurology Residency training, as dictated by the ACGME, requires one year of broad clinical experience in general internal medicine. This training can be done during the first year of the 48-month program or a year of graduate education accredited by the ACGME or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada prior to entering a 36-month program.

We have partnered with Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and the MedStar Union Memorial Hospital to provide ten reserved spots across these preliminary medicine neurology training tracks. You must apply separately to each program via ERAS using the unique NRMP numbers. You can choose to apply to multiple tracks. The Osler track does not offer reserved spots and you will need to interview separately for that program.

Track 1: Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center (JHBMC) Preliminary Medicine/Neurology

This program is linked with the Johns Hopkins Bayview residency program in internal medicine, offering five (5) spots. If selected for a neurology interview, you will not need a separate interview for the Bayview program, but you will get a chance to tour the campus before your interview.

Track 3: Johns Hopkins Osler Medical Residency – Preliminary Medicine

While this track does not offer reserved spots, we encourage you to apply to this program as well for your PGY1 Internal Medicine Prelim Year consideration. We have a great collaboration with our Osler Medical Residency Program and work closely with the program director during the interview season. Please keep in mind that this program has an applicant selection process, and a separate interview is required.

PGY2: Advanced Neurology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital Track

Can I submit materials in addition to what is required by ERAS?

Yes, you can send us any additional materials you wish. You may upload your documents via ERAS and they can be uploaded to your file. You may send a pdf via email to: [email protected]

Do you have USMLE score requirements?

Every application is considered on an individual basis. While there is no minimum score requirement, all applicants must have a passing score on both the USMLE Step I and Step II (CS and CK) to be ranked in the Neurology program. There are no specific requirements for foreign medical graduates. However, all IMGs must have been certified by the ECFMG.

What is the cutoff point for residency application after medical school graduation?

The cutoff point since time of graduation is 5 years.

Do you have any specific requirements for Letters of Recommendation?

Three (3) letters of recommendation are required to be submitted with your ERAS application. You may submit additional letters through your ERAS account as well. You can find all application requirements on the ERAS website at

International Applicants

Johns Hopkins neurology residency accepts international applicants who we feel match the educational, medical, interpersonal, and academic potential of our U.S.-based applicants. You must hold a current, valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). As a rule, candidates with direct patient experience within the previous 3 years are preferred.

The School of Medicine sponsors incoming Residents and Fellows for J-1 ECFMG Alien Physician Exchange Visitor status. This applies to Residents and Fellows joining the SOM from abroad, as well as those individuals in the U.S. in another nonimmigrant status. Visa issues are dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

The SOM sponsors H-1B temporary worker status in limited circumstances, specifically:

Residents who have earned their Medical Degree [M.D.] in the U.S. and are currently in an ACGME-accredited clinical training program on Optional Practical Training

OR

Residents who are currently completing their ACGME-accredited residency in the U.S. on an H-1B *and* where there is sufficient H-1B time remaining for the offered residency or fellowship.

OR

Fellows who are currently completing their ACGME-accredited fellowship in the U.S. on an H-1B *and* where there is sufficient H-1B time remaining for the offered residency or fellowship.
