Letter from the Fellowship Director
Our Neurocritical Care Fellowship Program at Johns Hopkins University is one of the oldest in the country, standing as a beacon of excellence in the field, with a rich history of shaping the careers of over 100 neurointensivists who now lead the field of neurocritical care across the nation and the world.
As the fellowship director, I am proud to be a part of our division that upholds the tripartite mission of Johns Hopkins University: excellence in patient-care, education and research. Our program, with its 13 diverse faculty members, who have expertise in different domains of neurocritical care, offers a unique environment where fellows can thrive in both clinical and research pursuits.
We provide excellent clinical training with exposure to a wide variety of acute neurologic pathology. Fellows are given the opportunity to take center stage, leading daily rounds, teaching fellow trainees and performing critical care procedures. We provide fellows with exposure to advanced invasive and noninvasive multimodality neuromonitoring and hemodynamic monitoring techniques. The backbone of our educational offerings is our longitudinal lecture series, weekly divisional seminars featuring esteemed national and international guest speakers and simulation-based learning. We provide a summer bootcamp to ensure a comprehensive onboarding experience for incoming fellows in critical care procedures, mechanical ventilation management and point-of-care ultrasound.
The Johns Hopkins Neurocritical Care Fellowship Program is well-renowned for its rigor in all realms of research. Several faculty write national and international guidelines and have expertise in running NIH-funded clinical trials, providing plethora of opportunities for mentorship. The Division of Brain Injury Outcomes (BiOS), under the leadership of Professor Daniel Hanley, provides unparalleled opportunities for long-term outcomes research and exposure to clinical trials. Through the Precision Medicine Center of Excellence for Neurocritical Care, spearheaded by our Division Director, Dr. Jose Suarez, fellows gain access to a vast database of continuous high-frequency signals data, fostering innovation in clinical, translational and precision medicine research projects.
Beyond the academic realm, our program, with its multitude of diverse faculty and fellows, is a community that fosters enduring national and international relationships, that have the potential to shape a fulfilling and impactful career in neurocritical care.
We extend a warm welcome to you as you embark on your journey with the Johns Hopkins Neurocritical Care Fellowship Program. We look forward to being a part of your growth and development as a distinguished neurointensivist. Together, let us explore the frontiers of neurocritical care and contribute to the advancement of this dynamic field.
Sincerely,
Vishank A. Shah
