Aging and Dementia Fellowship

The goal of this pre-doctoral and post-doctoral training program is to train young investigators in age-related cognitive and neuropsychiatric disorders. It is an interdisciplinary program funded by the National Institute on Aging, affiliated with the Department of Neurology and the Department of Psychiatry at the School of Medicine, the Department of Mental Health at the School of Public Health and the Department of Psychology and Brain Sciences at the School of Arts and Sciences.

Postdoctoral fellows are expected to engage in original research under the supervision of a faculty member. Doctoral trainees must complete the required coursework for their degree program, complete qualifying examinations and a research dissertation.

Program Features

Didactic Coursework

Fellows select one of the four areas of research under the supervision of a faculty mentor:

  • Clinical Studies of Aging and Age-Related Cognitive Disorders
  • Population Studies of Aging and Age-Related Cognitive Disorders
  • Imaging Studies of Aging and Age-Related Cognitive Disorders
  • Animal Models of Aging and Neurodegeneration

Clinical Activities

Fellows with clinical expertise are expected to spend a small portion of their time in patient care.

Seminars /Conferences:

  • Monthly Training Grant Meeting (2nd Monday of the month once per month) 4:00-5:00pm
  • Dementia Consortium: Mondays (3rd Monday of the month once per month) 4:00-5:00pm
  • Annual Meeting of Aging and Dementia (2nd  week of June)

Application Process

The program accepts applications on a rolling basis.

Prerequisites

  • Post-doctoral program: Successful completion of an ACGME accredited residency in Neurology or Psychiatry or successful completion of a PhD.
  • Pre-doctoral program: Applicants must be admitted to the training program through one of the following doctoral degree programs:

    1. the Department of Mental Health
    2. the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences
    3. the Department of Neuroscience

Please submit the following to the program director via email: 

  • Letter of intent
  • Current CV
  • 2 letters of recommendation

Applicants with appropriate qualifications will be asked to complete a WorkPlan as part of their application, which should include:

  1. An overview of the applicant’s goals for the training program
  2. A description of the research the applicant proposes to complete during the training period
  3. A description of the educational activities the applicant proposes to complete during the training period (including the required courses and relevant seminars)
  4. A brief description of clinical activities to be conducted, where appropriate

Examples of WorkPlans can be provided by the Program Director on request.
