Bladder Cancers

Experts from the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center and Brady Urological Institute at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. have expertise in managing all types of urologic cancers. Our specialists are part of Johns Hopkins’ Greenberg Bladder Cancer Institute, a first of its kind center dedicated to improving the lives and outcomes of patients with bladder cancer. Established in 2014, the virtual institute partners with leading experts around the world to share knowledge and collaborate on research.

Our fellowship-trained medical and radiation oncologists, urologists, radiologists and pathologists, along with nurses and other health professionals, work together to individualize treatment plans for patients, including providing access to cutting edge clinical trials. Our specialists practice a multidisciplinary collaborative approach to treating urologic malignancies and hold joint weekly tumor boards and clinical trial meetings with faculty colleagues at our main campus in East Baltimore. Our team uses innovative strategies, including genetic sequencing of individual tumors, to provide more treatment choices. Each patient participates in forming a personalized care plan that maximizes the opportunity for a successful outcome.

A Home for Women

Women may have a different journey when it comes to bladder cancer, with many having more complicated cancers of the bladder, ureter and renal pelvis. So Johns Hopkins urologic oncologists at Sibley Memorial Hospital are in the process of establishing a clinical and research center devoted to women with bladder cancer. “Women need a home center where we can focus our research and clinical efforts on women’s bladder cancer, and allow for a place where women feel more comfortable being in a center where there are other women with the same disease who look just like them,” says Jean Hoffman-Censits, assistant professor of oncology and co-director of the Women’s Bladder Cancer Center along with Armine Smith. “It’s time.” Besides a multidisciplinary clinic, the center aims to bring new research and clinical trials applicable to women. This includes studies of the long-term psychological outcomes for women bladder cancer survivors. Women’s support groups also are in the process of being formed.
