Treatment Options

The Johns Hopkins Intracerebral Hemorrhage Center offers the latest in diagnosis and treatment from a multidisciplinary team of stroke specialists—bringing patients the best combination of medical, surgical and neuroradiology expertise available.

Advanced blood testing, CT angiography and state-of-the-art imaging with the powerful 3 Tesla MRI, help pinpoint problems—including even the most rare hematologic disorders. Access to these technologies promotes a more accurate diagnosis and plan of care.

A range of treatment options—offered by neurologists, neurosurgeons and specialists in physical medicine and rehabilitation—are available to treat each of the types of ICH. Medical management is provided for seizure control, anticoagulation therapy, and modification of risk factors such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

The center’s experts also perform a range of advanced minimally invasive procedures, including surgical clipping and endovascular coiling for the treatment of aneurysms, and surgical resection and endovascular ablation for arteriovenous malformations. In addition, gamma knife treatment is available to precisely deliver beams of gamma radiation to malfunctioning regions of the brain. This treatment destroys the target while preserving normal brain tissue.

Interventional radiology techniques allow doctors to stop blood leakage by inserting tiny wires and clips without opening the skull. Rehabilitation services also are offered to help patients cope with the symptoms of ICH and promote effective recovery.

For patients who may have thought their choices for ICH treatment were limited, physicians at the Johns Hopkins Interacerebral Hemorrhage Center can offer a second opinion. Consultations include a review the patient’s medical history, as well as the many types of diagnostic studies and therapies that are available.
