The Stages of Development of Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes develops in three stages.

  • Stage 1. Diabetes-related autoantibodies develop.
  • Stage 2. The body develops high blood sugars in the setting of these autoantibodies.
  • Stage 3. Symptoms associated with high blood sugar develop. This is considered the clinical onset of type 1 diabetes.

Why Choose Us

Proactive Screening

Screening for type 1 diabetes can lead to early detection. Through our partnership with TrialNet, a global network dedicated to researching, identifying and preventing type 1 diabetes, we offer screening for type 1 diabetes and access to clinical research trials for individuals found to be in the early stages of the disease.

Clinical Program for Education and Monitoring

Our dedicated team of experts guides families through every stage of early type 1 diabetes. From diagnosis to ongoing management, we provide comprehensive education on blood sugar monitoring, early symptom recognition, and potential interventions at each stage. Through regular checkups and personalized care plans, we empower families to navigate the complexities of early type 1 diabetes with confidence and clarity.

Groundbreaking Treatment

For eligible candidates, we offer access to teplizumab, a monoclonal antibody, which is the first FDA-approved treatment to delay the onset of clinical diabetes by up to two years. This treatment represents a shift in the management of early type 1 diabetes, and is available at our clinic. Our team will work closely with the patient and family to determine if teplizumab is the right choice, ensuring personalized and effective care for your child every step of the way.
