Clinical Science Translational Training Program

Physicians who choose to prepare for a career as an academic pediatric pulmonologist will follow the postdoctoral Clinical Science Translational Training Program track. During their fellowship, clinical fellows will be expected to submit at least one first-authored peer-reviewed manuscript for publication and to present their research at a national research meeting. Trainees in this track are strongly encouraged to take the master of health science (MHS) degree that is offered through the Johns Hopkins Graduate Training Program in Clinical Investigation in their third year of fellowship. The MHS degree includes nine months of didactic coursework for advanced clinical research training. Examples of the required courses include: three quarters each of Statistical Reasoning and Epidemiologic Methods; two quarters each of Biomedical Writing and Principles of Grant Writing; one quarter each of the Responsible Conduct of Research, Principles of Drug Development, Ethical and Regulatory Issues in Clinical Research, Public Health Perspectives, Professional Goals and Development, Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis. This offering will be made available at no cost to our trainees. Trainees who opt to complete the MHS degree will have a reduction of their clinical responsibilities in the third year.

Trainees who do not opt for the MHS degree program will be expected to take Statistical Reasoning for two quarters in their second year of fellowship and Principles of Epidemiology for one quarter during their third year of fellowship. These trainees will also be encouraged to take three to four courses offered through the Science of Clinical Investigation (SOCI) Training Program during their three years of training. SOCI offers courses that are designed to enhance clinical scientists’ theoretical and practical skills in design, implementation and interpretation of data from clinical investigations. These courses will be made available at no cost to our trainees.

Research Training Program

Physicians who choose to focus on basic and translational research and Ph.D.s who follow the postdoctoral Research Training Program track will apply to the program and work with an individual faculty who will act as their research mentor during their training. During their fellowship, research fellows are expected to submit at least one first-authored peer-reviewed manuscript for publication and present their research at a national research meeting. Physicians and Ph.D.s who choose this track will have no clinical responsibilities during their fellowship years. Both physicians and Ph.D.s will take courses offered by the Bloomberg School of Public Health or other Schools at the university, as determined by their primary research preceptor. Physicians and Ph.D.s who follow the research track may spend from one to three years as part of this training program.
