IEE Outstanding Educator Awards
The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is rich with talent. We have great teachers, educators and leaders. The IEE Outstanding Educator Awards are designed to recognize and celebrate our outstanding educators and acknowledge great achievements in education.
All awards are open to any full or part-time faculty member of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and are peer nominated, reviewed and selected. Diversity, equity and inclusion are part of the JHUSOM and IEE’s Foundational Principles for Teaching and Education (Principle #5). We encourage those making nominations to recognize the rich diversity of our faculty when making nominations. Each award recipient will be listed on the IEE website "Awards" page, and recognition in the graduation brochure.
Award nominations are accepted year-round. Please see below for the nomination deadline for next year's award season.

Nomination materials must be complete and received by IEE by 5 p.m. on Monday, January 13th, 2025.
Important Nomination Instructions:

Please read all instructions and carefully follow the requirements for each award category, each has different requirements. Please adhere to maximum page number requirements and specific materials requested. Any additional materials will not be considered by selection committees.

Candidates can only be nominated for one award category per year.

Previous recipients of a specific award category are not eligible for the same award again.

Anyone can nominate a qualified candidate and self-nomination is permitted. Please be sure the complete nomination package is submitted.

Notification of decision will be sent to nominators and nominees by the spring of each year, before the annual IEE Education Conference and Celebration.

Lifetime Achievement in Education
Martin D. Abeloff Award for Lifetime Achievement in Medical and Biomedical Education
The highest of the IEE's honors is named for Dr. Martin D. Abeloff whose long and illustrious career at Johns Hopkins left an indelible mark. Dr. Ableoff, began at Hopkins in 1966, and held many educational and leadership positions. From 1992 until his passing, he served as Director of the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center. He was a visionary leader, superb physician and educator, and world class scholar. He was a much respected colleague and mentor. Dr. Abeloff led the Committee on Educational Values and Rewards, established by Dr. Edward Miller, to study the strengths, challenges and future of our educational mission. Upon his death in 2007, in his memory and honor, the committee was renamed the Martin D. Ableoff Committee on Educational Values and Rewards, which had as its overarching recommendation the establishment of the Institute for Excellence in Education.
This award is selected and awarded by the IEE Board of Directors.
Candidates must have a current or former association with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and have demonstrated commitment to and extensive achievement in medical and/or biomedical education.

A nomination letter detailing the nominee's accomplishments and broad impact in medical and/or biomedical education, their association with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (such as a current or former student, trainee or faculty member) and demonstrated respect for diversity and inclusiveness.

All Other Education Awards for Outstanding Achievement
We believe we have outstanding educators and want to celebrate their great achievements. IEE's Education Awards for Outstanding Achievement are available to all faculty, both full- and part-time.
Lisa J. Heiser Award for Junior Faculty Contribution in Education
The Lisa J. Heiser Award for Junior Faculty Contribution in Education is named in honor of Lisa J. Heiser, MA, Assistant Dean for Faculty Development and Equity, Johns Hopkins Medicine, 2006-2011. Lisa was the embodiment of what makes Johns Hopkins Medicine special; smart and multitalented, combining fierce tenacity and commitment with tremendous personal warmth, friendliness and collegiality. The Heiser award is given to a early career faculty member, in her/his career 5 years or less on Hopkins faculty who has made an outstanding contribution in medical/biomedical education, and shows great promise for future meaningful contributions to medical and biomedical education. A 12-month extension can be considered for major life events.
The application packet must include:

Educational Innovation Award
The Educational Innovation Award recognizes an individual or, in some cases, a team, for having developed a resource that directly improves medical or biomedical education. This award is meant to encourage faculty members to creatively apply their talents to improve the academic needs of learners on a national scale. Innovation should have been implemented within five years of application.>
The application packet must include the following:
- A nomination letter with a 200 - 500 word description of the innovation, or series of innovations, (three sentences or less)> for which the nominee is. This document should also contain a description of how and why the innovation is different from other solutions, and the impact the project has had on medical and biomedical education
- Two to three additional letters of support including one from a peer and one or two from a recipient or user of the innovation. Note that we will not accept more than two additional letters.
- CV of the nominee(s)
The application may also include:
- A link/sample/access to the innovation(s)
Note: Innovation should have been implemented within five years of application.
Outstanding Educational Administration Awards
The Institute for Excellence in Education (IEE) Outstanding Educational Administration awards are designed to recognize staff members (not faculty) for their work in administration of educational programs. The IEE appreciates that highly successful educational programs require the expertise and dedication of administrative leadership.
Eligibility:
SOM staff member overseeing an educational program(s) that is at a minimum 50% of their effort, have been in the role at least three years and has primary responsibility for administration of the educational program(s).
Award categories:
- Leslie Lichter Award for Outstanding Educational Administration (Nonclinical)
- Outstanding Educational Administration Award (clinical)
The nomination package must include:
1. Nomination letter (2 page maximum) must include:
- Clearly indicate the nominee's name and contact information
- For which award the nomination is being made
- A brief overview of the nominee’s responsibilities:
- How long the nominee has been in the role
- Program(s) involved
- Learner group(s) involved
- IMPACT of nominee’s work on the items listed below. (This will be a large component of the review and selection process)
- Program's successes
- Innovations or improvements
- Learning environment/Impact on the culture of the program
- Examples of their dedication to the program(s)
2. Letters of Support
- Two letters of support from learners/past learners in the program(s); no more than two will be accepted (each, one page max).
Teaching and Facilitating Learning Awards
The Teaching and Facilitating Learning Awards recognize outstanding achievement in teaching and facilitation of learning. Three awards are given: one for those on faculty less than 10 years, one for those on faculty 10 or more years, and one specifically for part-time faculty. A 12-month extension can be considered for major life events. For the six awards of the domains of education, please refer to the Educator Domains, Competencies and Metrics for that domain.
Three awards are given:

The application packet must include:
- Indicate for which award the nomination is being made
- Clearly indicate the nominee's name and contact information
1. Letters of support:
- A nomination letter (two-page maximum, no smaller than 11 point font) from faculty/leadership which describes the nominee's evidence of excellence as a teacher.
- Two additional letters of support from learners. Note that we will not accept more than two additional letters.
2. From nominee:
- Summary Evaluation of Teaching, including ratings on Likert scale-style questions and qualitative comments from learners (two pages maximum)
- Statement of Teaching Philosophy (one page maximum)
- Names/dates of classes/teaching opportunities and type of learners taught (two pages maximum)
Note: we do not accept applicant’s CVs for this award.
Program and Curriculum Development Award
The Program and Curriculum Development Award recognizes a noteworthy medical or biomedical team responsible for an educational program or curriculum which has been implemented for five years or less. Programs are judged on their impact on learners, including learner satisfaction, educational outcomes attained, and scholarship and recognition. For the six awards of the domains of education, please refer to the Educator Domains, Competencies and Metrics for that domain.
The application packet must include the following:
- A nomination letter (two-page maximum, no smaller than 11 point font) which should include a description of the program, the team and details above regarding development, learner assessment, educational strategies used, evidence of scholarship and likelihood of sustainability.
- Two additional letters of support are required. One of these should be from an individual who has been a learner in the program. We will not accept more than 2 letters.
- Learner and program evaluation data (provide quantitative data and no more than two pages of narrative comments from program participants)
Mentoring, Coaching and Advising Award
The Mentoring, Coaching and Advising Award recognizes outstanding achievement in mentoring, coaching and/or advising. The recipient is selected based on the nominees’ contributions to the success of their learners. For the six awards of the domains of education, please refer to the Educator Domains, Competencies and Metrics for that domain.
Mentors, Coaches and Advisors may contribute in many areas, including, but not limited to:
- Intellectual growth and development
- Career development
- Professional guidance
- Advocacy
The application packet must include the following:
- Nomination letter (two-page maximum, no smaller than 11 point font) addressing the nominee's contributions with as much specificity as possible to demonstrate the dedication of the mentor to the achievements and success of their trainees.
- Nominee's Curriculum Vitae.
- If not included in the CV, a representative list of trainees mentored, including information regarding their outcome (such as degree(s) earned, job placement and/or current positions)
- Two additional letters of support including one from a peer and one from a mentee. We will not accept more than two letters.
Assessment and Evaluation Award
The Assessment and Evaluation Award recognizes an individual or, in some cases, a team for demonstrating exemplary creation or utilization of assessment and evaluation tools to evaluate competency, provide feedback for improvement, identify learner gaps, measure progress over time, and ensure educational quality. For the six awards of the domains of education, please refer to the Educator Domains, Competencies and Metrics for that domain.
This award is intended to encourage faculty members to creatively apply their talents in assessing and evaluating learners and/or educational programs, thereby contributing to evidence-based decision-making and continuous quality improvement efforts to assess learners and program effectiveness and measure learning and success in medical or biomedical education.
The application packet must include the following:
- A nomination letter (two-page maximum, no smaller than 11 point font) which provides a description of the assessment or evaluation tool(s) or method(s) that was created, evaluated or implemented, and its impact.
- Two additional letters of support. Note that we will not accept more than two additional letters.
- CV of the nominee(s)
The application may also include:
- A link/sample/access to the assessment or evaluation tool, method or process.
Educational Leadership Award
The Educational Leadership Award recognizes a faculty member who demonstrates outstanding achievement in the Educational Leadership competencies, whose leadership has shown impact of program(s), initiative(s) , organization(s) or educational grant(s). For the six awards of the domains of education, please refer to the Educator Domains, Competencies and Metrics for that domain.
The application packet must include the following:
- A nomination letter (two-page maximum, no smaller than 11 point font) which provides a description of the leadership attributes and the program/initiative/organization/educational grant which the nominee leads/has led.
- Two additional letters of support. We will not accept more than 2 letters
- Nominee's Curriculum Vitae.
The application packet may also include:
- A link to the program/initiative/organization/grant
Educational Scholarship Award
The Educational Scholarship Award recognizes a faculty member who has a body of educational scholarship work. We define scholarship broadly and include not only publications, but also workshops, other dissemination and contributions to other institutions. For the six awards of the domains of education, please refer to the Educator Domains, Competencies and Metrics for that domain.
The application packet must include the following:
- A nomination letter (two-page maximum, no smaller than 11 point font) which provides a description of the body of work including articles and other scholarship in education
- One or two additional letters of support. We will not accept more than two additional letters.
- CV of the nominee
- An annotated bibliography
The application packet may also include:
