Use of drugs (including alcohol) for non-medicinal purposes is associated with behaviors that put people at risk for acquiring infectious diseases and with sub-optimal treatment adherence that jeopardizes health outcomes. Additional co-existing social and structural challenges, including unemployment, incarceration, and homelessness, are compounding factors that complicate service delivery for many people living with SUD. Our researchers characterize and address treatment barriers and develop, implement, and evaluate interventions to improve health outcomes among people living with substance use disorders.
