Pediatric Heart Surgery | Lemuel's Story

Our Approach to Care

We use a gentle, child-appropriate approach to diagnostic techniques. After assessing your child’s condition, we meet as a team to determine a unique treatment plan.

ICU Specializing in Little Hearts

We have one of the few pediatric cardiac intensive care units in the region. Research shows that a cardiac intensive care unit dedicated to babies and children provides more seamless care for the child.

Care for the Whole Family

If your child has a heart problem, you probably have lots of questions. Our care for your child includes clear communication and support for you and your family. We help you understand every step, so you know what’s happening, when and why. A child life specialist is available to explain treatment to your child or your child’s siblings.

Early Detection in the Womb

If your baby is diagnosed with a congenital heart condition before birth, we monitor your child with heart imaging scans throughout your pregnancy. We can work with you and your obstetric/maternal-fetal medicine team at Johns Hopkins Medicine or elsewhere to help provide the best care before and after delivery and plan for your baby’s future heart care.

If you choose to deliver your baby at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, our delivery rooms and our heart center are under the same roof, so it’s easy to visit your baby while he or she is being cared for in our heart center.

Heart Research for Kids

Many of our doctors and specialists conduct research that helps discover new, effective therapies for children’s heart problems. This insight ensures your child has the chance to benefit from the most innovative treatments available.

Our Care Locations

Consultations for pediatric heart conditions take place at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and community clinics throughout the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., metro areas.

It's frightening to hand over your baby or child for treatment of a heart malformation. But we are committed to each child throughout every procedure and throughout their lives. Whenever we meet with a new family, we stress that we are not going to do anything that isn't necessary. Our job is to keep your child safe, no matter what.
