Damewood Research

The Damewood Medical Student Fund was established through the generous support of Drs. Marian and Richard Damewood. The fund supports medical student education and research in women’s health. Damewood scholars have the opportunity to explore their scholarly areas of interest and find mentorship in the Johns Hopkins Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics (Gyn/Ob) for a lifelong career in women’s health.

The Damewood Research Awards promote scholarship in women’s health among medical students at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Projects may encompass one of many aspects of women’s health care including clinical care, quality improvement, medical education, challenges in health disparities and health delivery.

Featured Research ProjectImproving the Prevention of Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) in Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy for Gynecologic Cancer

Alyssa Kretz is one of two medical students awarded a Damewood Research Grant during its third year. She will work with Dr. Anna Beavis of The Kelly Gynecologic Oncology Service to study the connection between individuals with cancer and the likelihood of developing Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) and contribute to the development of gynecologic cancer-specific risk prediction models.

Kretz is currently pursuing a Master of Public Health degree at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health between her third and fourth years of medical school. She has a deep interest in gynecologic oncology and reproductive health, and hopes to improve patient satisfaction and quality of life.

Evaluating a Trauma-Informed Care Curriculum's Impact on Medical Student Readiness

Third-year medical student Terrence Tsou also received a Damewood Research Grant during year three of the awards. He will work with Dr. Jennifer Acton Robinson of Complex Family Planning at Bayview Medical Center to implement a study to inform the future design of Trauma-Informed Care curriculum development in medical education. His goal is to improve patient outcomes and the patient experience in instances of trauma.

Tsou studied biology at Washington University in St. Louis and worked as a research assistant at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston before starting medical school.

Program OverviewDiversity Subinternship in Gynecology and Obstetrics

This is a competitive sub-internship opportunity for one student to visit Johns Hopkins for four weeks and work with the gynecologic oncology, maternal-fetal medicine and labor and delivery, or minimally invasive gynecology service. The scholarship covers living and travel costs for the medical student for the duration of the internship.
