Professional Experience
Research Focus
I am a Research Associate in the Biomedical Informatics & Data Science (BIDS) Section of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. My duties within the section involve advising master’s students in our MS Applied and MS Research programs and managing the required capstone. I also support our growing PhD program providing primary advising to Year 1 PhD students, serving on Qualifying Exam Committees, and working with advisors to support student progress. From 2007 to 2020, I served as a Senior Health Informatics Advisor and Senior Research Advisor at Jhpiego, Inc., a JHU-affiliated global health and capacity development organization that supports health systems across Asia and Africa. Major accomplishments included designing a framework for testing clinical decision rules for an intrapartum point-of-care application and leading the field testing for a mobile data capture tool to support quality improvement. My informatics skills were complemented with competencies and experience in problem analysis, rapid software prototyping, interactive data visualization, descriptive epidemiology, data analysis, human subjects research, ethics, and open data.
Educational Focus
I have 10+ years of experience supporting graduate students and academic programs in public health and health informatics. Responsibilities have included: pre-admissions advising; admissions review and assessment; professional goals analysis and academic advising; career advising; classroom and online teaching; teaching abroad; course design; course management; TA hiring and supervision; capstone and practicum oversight; curriculum review; committee leadership; and accreditation support. I bring a personal, learner-centered approach to my work and interactions with students. My work as an educator is informed by 15+ years of hands-on professional experience in a number of relevant sectors and areas: federal intramural research; local and state public health; global health; and independent consulting.
