    Founded in 1931, the Children’s Cardiac Clinic and the Division of Pediatric Cardiology was directed by Dr. Helen Brooke Taussig and was the first of its kind. Johns Hopkins remains in the forefront of pediatric cardiology in clinical care, new diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, and research. The program trains candidates for careers in academic pediatric cardiology, with a minimum of three years required for the subboard of pediatric cardiology. Additional training is available for those undertaking a supported research program.

    The pediatric critical care experience at The Johns Hopkins Hospital provides for a broad multidisciplinary exposure to the many facets of pediatric critical care medicine. The pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) is a 40-bed unit with a balance of medical and surgical patients. Johns Hopkins Children’s Center is the pediatric trauma and transplant center (heart, liver, kidney) in our region, with the largest cardiac surgery extracorporeal membrane oxygenation program in the state of Maryland and an active critical care transport team.

    The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes offers a comprehensive academic training program that consists of three years of training in contemporary pediatric endocrinology research and practice. The overall goal of the program is to train physician scientists and clinical investigators in pediatric endocrinology in a program that stresses the integration of clinical endocrinology, research and discovery.

    The Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition offers a three-year fellowship designed to provide training and expertise in medical care and clinical, translational and/or basic science research for graduates to pursue careers as independent investigators in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition. The ACGME-accredited Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition Fellowship Program is established in the Department of Pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.

    The pediatric surgery training program offers intensive and broad exposure to the practice of pediatric surgery over a two-year period. During the first year, the fellow rotates for six months at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and for six months at the University of Maryland hospital to provide experience with clinical populations of two large university services. The second year is spent at Johns Hopkins. An optional third year of research training also is offered..

  • Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship

    Fellows spend 52 weeks over three years treating and managing in- and outpatients with kidney issues, including intensive care patients requiring hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and continuous renal replacement therapy. During this time, fellows pursue a master’s degree in epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and participate in epidemiology journal club and grand rounds. A track for basic science research is also available. Several general nephrology and transplant clinics take place each month.
