Director of Psychiatry
As a medical psychiatrist, Andrew Angelino manages the mental health needs of patients with COVID-19 and takes care of their testing, signs and symptoms. He led the creation and successful operation of the only COVID-positive psychiatric inpatient unit in the state of Maryland. In recognition of Angelino’s clinical and operational excellence, the University of Maryland Medical System sent psychiatrists to him to learn how they might establish their own comparable unit. Angelino stepped up at a time when there was a clear need to care for patients who could not be easily accommodated by the medical units because of their behavioral issues.

Jennifer Katzenstein, Ph.D.
Director of Psychology and Neuropsychology
In addition to directing pediatric psychology and neuropsychology, Jennifer Katzenstein voluntarily accepted directorship for social work services with 28 full-time equivalent positions in 2020. She has reorganized the services, provided monthly performance feedback, marshaled additional professional support services for social work, and raised the bar of performance and service delivery by social work. Additionally, Katzenstein led the Epic implementation for psychology, neuropsychology and social work.

Russell Hales, M.D.
Director, Thoracic Oncology Multidisciplinary Program
At the patient level, Russell Hales is compassionate, empathetic and rational, and he is an excellent communicator with colleagues and patients. He has helped to integrate the Johns Hopkins thoracic oncology service line, and played a pivotal role in helping design the thoracic multidisciplinary clinical operations on a single campus and within a single clinic space at Johns Hopkins Bayview, creating an environment that optimizes the patient experience. Hales’ attention to detail, commitment, and willingness to review every element of a clinical case with his colleagues are remarkable.

Valerie Owings, M.D.
Family Practice Physician, JHCP Annapolis
Valerie Owings stepped in to the interim office medical director role at Johns Hopkins Community Physicians – Annapolis location when the office’s medical director was deployed to New York during the pandemic. Owings assumed the role without hesitation, and provided the hands-on guidance, leadership and inspiration the team needed. A family practice physician, Owings provides outstanding service to patients, as evidenced by her CAHPS scores, and has provided exemplary service during COVID-19. She was instrumental in the continued implementation of video visits, and she assisted in designing staff work-from-home schedules. She set the groundwork for the JHCP Ambulatory Appointment Regulatory Checklist as they prepared to see patients back in the practice, and because of her leadership, the practice was able to meet the requirements needed to reopen safely and provide patient care.

Jeanne Sheffield, M.D.
Division Director, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics
Jeanne Sheffield designed protocols for getting patients under investigation for COVID-19 into a specially designed unit once they were found to be positive, and played a leading role in designing the obstetrics COVID-19 unit. During these challenging times, Sheffield has remained focused on maintaining the safety of some of the most vulnerable patients — mothers and infants. She exemplifies the mission and values of obstetrics and gynecology through her leadership, patient care and innovative perspectives. Whether caring for patients or training the physicians of tomorrow, Sheffield stands out as a “truly exemplary physician, and a kind and compassionate human being.”

Ronny Khatkar, M.D.

Ronny Khatkar is unceasingly willing to tackle whatever task is needed. He works hard and cares deeply for his patients. During COVID-19, he volunteered for extra shifts when staffing was tight and took over nights when the need arose. Described as always friendly, easy to talk to, responsive, a great communicator and a caring physician, Khatkar is known for explaining the plan of care during rounds so well so that everyone is on the same page. He is especially effective at facilitating communications between colleagues and consultants to ensure exceptional patient care.

The teamwork, respect and dignity shown for one another resulted in a highly effective unit that benefited their patients.
