Professional Interests: Pediatric or Neonatal Intensive Care

Why did you choose to pursue a PGY2 pediatric residency? I was first introduced to pediatric pharmacy as a pharmacy intern at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. My first-hand experience with compounding various drug preparations drew me in to the complexity of pediatric pharmacokinetics. This curiosity translated into seeking pediatric opportunities during my PGY-1 year, including pediatric general medicine and ambulatory care electives. I knew I found my passion in pediatrics when I consistently found myself excited and motivated to learn how to better support pediatric patients and their families. A pediatric PGY-2 residency allows me to further explore a wide variety of settings to discover my professional interests and fine-tune my clinical skillset.

What drew you to the pharmacy residency program at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital? I initially was drawn to the wide variety of unique elective learning experiences, ranging from the cystic fibrosis clinic to the CVICU. As someone who is open to exploring specialties within pediatrics, these robust rotation opportunities allow me to gain exposure to a diverse range of complex disease states. Additionally, after speaking with prior residents and preceptors, I could tell that the residency team had a solid foundation of clinical teaching and understanding resident well-being. Transitioning from an adult-focused PGY-1 to a pediatric PGY-2 will be an exciting challenge, and I know I will have the best team to support me towards my goal of becoming a pediatric pharmacy leader, mentor, and preceptor.

Pharmacy School: Pacific University School of Pharmacy - Hillsboro, OR

PGY1 Program: Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters - Norfolk, VA

Professional interests: Hematology/Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant

Why did you choose to pursue a PGY2 pediatric residency? Pediatric pharmacy first piqued my interest during college when my young cousin was diagnosed with cancer. Seeing the care that was provided, along with the passion radiating from his care team, I knew exactly where I wanted to practice. That was further affirmed while completing my first year of residency at a children's hospital. I chose to do a second year of residency to gain more experience in pediatric oncology, while also learning more about different areas of pediatric care to understand the overall patient better. Additionally, I wanted more experience precepting learners and engaging in education with the healthcare team.

What drew you to the pharmacy residency program at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital? I was drawn to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital specifically through my interactions with the team. I enjoyed meeting with Marla during Midyear and also loved the time the hematology/oncology pharmacists provided me during my interviews. I was also intrigued by the variety of rotations offered and seeing how I can gear my rotations to my future career.
