Steven J. Kravet, M.D., M.B.A., F.A.C.P.
President of Johns Hopkins Community Physicians
A professor of medicine, Steven J. Kravet, M.D., M.B.A., heads Johns Hopkins Community Physicians (JHCP), one of the largest academically affiliated network of community practices that serves more than 280,000 patients annually at more than 50 locations throughout Maryland, Washington, D.C., and northern Virginia.
A third-generation pharmacist and community health care advocate who prizes the relationships that develop between patients and care-givers, Dr. Kravet has spent more than three decades at Johns Hopkins, providing escalating leadership in a wide variety of programs. Before being named president of JHCP in 2009, he had been medical director of inpatient medical services, internal medicine and ambulatory services, as well as chief medical officer for quality and patient safety at Johns Hopkins Bayview, and deputy director for clinical activity in the Department of Medicine. Having earned an M.B.A. in Johns Hopkins’ Carey Business School, he applied his understanding of the business issues affecting outpatient care to help triple the size of JHCP, all while maintaining high measured levels of quality and satisfaction from patients and team members. Dr. Kravet has published academically on the benefits of primary care, clinical excellence, quality and safety and medical education. The American College of Physicians has used Dr. Kravet’s research on primary care processes to formulate plans for redesigning health care practices.
After receiving his pharmacist degree from the Rutgers University College of Pharmacy, Dr. Kravet helped run his family’s pharmacy in Spotswood, New Jersey. He then attended the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, New Jersey. He arrived at Johns Hopkins Bayview as a resident in 1992 and has spent his entire career at Hopkins. Among his honors are the Resident Teaching Award, the Department of Medicine Chairman’s Award, and the Samuel Asper Award from the Maryland Chapter of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Kravet is the inaugural holder of the Douglas L. Lee and Barbara Levinson-Lee endowed professorship in Clinical Practice, an honor for which he is extremely proud.
