Sharon Smyth

Vice President, Nursing and Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer, The Johns Hopkins Hospital

Sharon Smyth has served as chief nursing officer and vice president, nursing and patient care services at The Johns Hopkins Hospital since February 2025. In this role, Dr. Smyth leads the clinical care and initiatives of the department of nursing at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, as well as regulatory affairs and patient and guest services.

Dr. Smyth first came to Johns Hopkins in 2018 as senior director of nursing for the Department of Emergency Medicine for both The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. The dual role allowed her to integrate and standardize emergency nursing care across the Johns Hopkins Health System’s Baltimore City campuses, ensuring the most effective patient care. During her three years as senior director, she also led the Lifeline Critical Care transport team and served as co-director of the Judy Reitz Capacity Command Center.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Smyth served as chief nursing officer of the Baltimore Convention Center Field Hospital, a collaboration among Johns Hopkins Health System, the University of Maryland Medical System and the state of Maryland that offered an alternative care site for patients with COVID-19, as well as testing and vaccinations for the novel coronavirus.

In 2021, Dr. Smyth was named vice president, nursing, and chief nursing officer for Johns Hopkins Bayview, where she worked to implement strategies to reduce nursing turnover and improve employee satisfaction and engagement.

Dr. Smyth obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from Chamberlain College of Nursing in Downers Grove, Illinois. In 2017, she earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice, specializing in executive leadership, from Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut.

She began her career as a bedside nurse, working in critical care, newborn intensive care, and the adult emergency department at hospitals in England and the United States. Before joining Johns Hopkins, she held positions of increasing responsibility at Yale New Haven Hospital in Connecticut, including as clinical program director for the Heart and Vascular Center.
