J. Edward Beranek, Jr., M.B.A.
Vice President of Revenue Management and Reimbursement
Ed Beranek is the vice president of revenue management and reimbursement for the Johns Hopkins Health System. He is responsible for managing the hospital rate-setting functions for each of the Johns Hopkins hospitals in Maryland within the framework of regulations set forth by the Health Services Cost Review Commission (HSCRC). His responsibilities also include assuring compliance with Medicare and Medicaid reporting requirements.
Beranek has been working in the Maryland health care industry for over 25 years, beginning his career in 1989 at The Johns Hopkins Hospital as unit financial coordinator in the Department of Pediatrics. He transitioned to health system regulatory finance in 1991, taking on various analyst and managerial roles. In 2003, Beranek left Johns Hopkins to work with KPMG (Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler) in a regulatory consulting position representing Maryland hospitals. He returned to John Hopkins in 2005 and was named one of the first directors of finance with responsibilities for the psychiatry, oncology and physical medicine and rehabilitation service lines. He assumed the director of regulatory compliance position in 2006, was named senior director of regulatory compliance in 2013, and assumed his current position in 2015.
Beranek represents the Johns Hopkins Health System at various Maryland Hospital Association work groups and HSCRC task force committees assisting the industry in shaping health care regulatory policy.
He earned his bachelor’s degree with a concentration in management information systems from Loyola College in Maryland and an M.B.A. from the University of Baltimore.
