David Friel, M.H.A.
Vice President, Managed Care
David Friel joined Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM) in January 2023 as the vice president of managed care. In this role, Friel leads JHM’s creation and execution of strategies to strengthen the organization’s position in the evolving managed care marketplace, including development of products and centers of excellence.
Friel’s oversight spans all strategic and contracting aspects of managed care, including physician groups, ambulatory surgery centers, ancillary programs and practices. He also leads the development, strategic planning, contract negotiation, execution, operationalization and compliance regarding payer contracts.
Before coming to Johns Hopkins, Friel was the vice president of payer strategy for a large hospital network in Pennsylvania. He focused on strategy, negotiation, analysis, communication and implementation of commercial, Medicare Advantage, direct employer and Medicaid managed care third-party contracts for all 28 hospitals, for ambulatory service centers and for their physicians. He also served as vice president of third-party contracting for Geisinger Health.
Friel earned a master’s degree in health services administration from Marywood University and a bachelor’s degree from Temple University.
