Brian Balch
Executive Director of Information Technology, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center
Brian Balch is responsible for leading IT strategy, planning IT infrastructure and overseeing IT support at Johns Hopkins Bayview. He works closely with local business, clinical and academic leadership to support, develop and implement strategic plans in alignment with the Johns Hopkins University and Health System Office of Information Technology.
Brian first came to Johns Hopkins Bayview in 2001 as a LAN administrator. He has served as the interim senior director of IT since Andrew Frake’s retirement in August 2024, leading a local team of 15 IT and clinical informatics professionals. Prior to that, Brian served as director of technology for Johns Hopkins Bayview since 2014. Over his last decade of leadership, Brian has led the system initiative to select and implement the Epic Secure Chat/Connexall platform, provided IT leadership to navigate the complex logistical, operational and supply chain challenges during the pandemic, and served as the technical leader for the full life cycle of the Meditech electronic health record and the subsequent transition to Epic. His long tenure at the Medical Center makes him well positioned to communicate and advocate for JHBMC-specific needs across central IT, as well as communicate central IT initiatives and priorities across JHBMC.
Brian serves as the IT lead for the Hospital Incident Command System (HICS) at Johns Hopkins Bayview. He also served on the Medical Center’s 250th Anniversary Committee, and played a pivotal role in the planning of our Anniversary Symposium in October. Brian holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from The State University of New York at Buffalo.
