Background
John Thompson, M.D., is an orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon seeing patients in the Washington, D.C., area who treats a wide variety of orthopaedic foot and ankle issues. His expertise includes sports injuries and trauma to the foot and ankle, complex foot and ankle reconstruction for deformity and arthritis including total ankle replacements, and forefoot surgery such as bunions. He sees patients ranging in age from adolescents through the elderly.
Dr. Thompson is an assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he completed medical school and an orthopaedic surgery residency, and served as administrative chief resident. Most recently, he completed an orthopaedic foot and ankle surgery fellowship at Medstar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore.
Dr. Thompson’s research interests include improving the diagnosis and treatment of infections involving orthopaedic implants, degenerative conditions of the foot and ankle, and sports related injuries.

Dr. Thompson is an incredible doctor and surgeon. After several surgeries from other doctors that left me with collapsed foot bones and severe arthritis,, Dr. Thompson operated on my foot. I went from extreme pain in everyday walking to being able to walk miles with no pain or swelling. He gave me back an active life and my dream of going to India, Thailand, and Shanghai and walking through each country.

Dr, Thompson is a skilled surgeon and performed repairs to two tendons in my left ankle in December 2023. The surgery was efficiently organized at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda. I was discharged at midday. I saw Dr. Thompson four or five times for follow-up visits after the surgery, and he monitored my progress through physical therapy, as well. I recently saw him on my final visit and he was impressed with the level of physical activity that I had resumed.

He did surgery on my arthritic foot that he found had a dislocated bone on the bottom. Other doctors I went to didn't want to touch it. He didn't think It was a problem and was able to fix it. I am doing amazing now and wouod highly recommend Dr. John Thompson .

This doctor is very good but I don't really know the extent because I was only examined by him once. He was very thorough In his physical exam of my problem. He did tell me to follow-up with him, therefore I can learn more about him. He discussed a surgical proceedure with me that I have a very specific concern regarding the proceedure. My concern still remains, so I am uncertain about having the surgery. The doctor was very helpful in providing new information about how my orthopedic problem could affect my current health problems. This was helpful.
