Background

Dr. Tammy Brady is a professor of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She specializes in pediatric hypertension but provides care for children with all types of kidney problems, from microscopic hematuria to kidney transplant recipients. Dr. Brady serves as the Medical Director of the Pediatric Hypertension Program at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  In this role she also serves as the Medical Director of the ReNEW clinic, a multidisciplinary pediatric obesity hypertension clinic. She is also the Vice Chair of Clinical Research for the Department of Pediatrics.

After graduating magna cum laude from Boston College with a degree in psychology and philosophy, Dr. Brady earned her medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in pediatrics at The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, where she was chief resident. Dr. Brady performed her fellowship in pediatric nephrology at Johns Hopkins. As part of her fellowship training, she received a master’s degree in clinical epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Dr. Brady joined the Johns Hopkins faculty in 2008. After joining the faculty, she returned to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and was awarded a Ph.D. in clinical investigation. In 2016 she was appointed as an Associate Faculty Member in the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research and in 2020 she was appointed as a Core Faculty Member.  

Her research interests include pediatric hypertension and cardiovascular health promotion across the lifespan; specifically, she is interested in improving the diagnosis of hypertension in children and adults, in identifying risk factors for end organ damage among children with hypertension, and in testing interventions to lower blood pressure in children.

Obesity Hypertension Clinic: Reversing the Negative Cardiovascular Effects of Weight (ReNEW) - Lab Website

  • Hypertension in children is a major cause of disease, including early onset heart disease. Up to 25% of children who are overweight or obese have hypertension (high blood pressure), and children with obesity are at greater risk for having other cardiovascular disease risk factors such as high cholesterol and diabetes. The ReNEW Clinic provides an innovative multidisciplinary approach to the evaluation and treatment of obesity-related hypertension to help prevent and treat cardiovascular disease. This clinic is designed for children with elevated blood pressure (prehypertension and hypertension) and a BMI at or above the 85th percentile.

Research Summary

Tammy Brady’s research is focused on promoting cardiovascular health across the patient lifespan. She has National Institutes of Health funding to determine the impact of dietary intake, mood disorders and adverse childhood experiences on cardiovascular disease risk factors in youth. 

Dr. Brady is part of a multidisciplinary team working on Resolve to Save Lives, an international campaign to decrease cardiovascular disease mortality worldwide. As part of this team, she has led two impactful clinical trials to study the effect of cuff size and resting on blood pressure measurement.

Dr. Brady directs a multidisciplinary obesity hypertension clinic called the Reversing the Negative cardiovascular Effects of Weight (ReNew) clinic. Many children in this clinic are enrolled in a longitudinal registry, which has formed the basis of several clinical investigations on how to better care for children with multiple risk factors for heart disease. In addition to her personal research efforts, Brady serves as vice chair for clinical research in the Department of Pediatrics.
