Background

David S. Cooper, MD, MACP is a graduate of the Tufts University School of Medicine and completed his endocrinology training at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He is currently Professor of Medicine and Radiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Professor of International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is one of the editors of the iconic textbook on thyroid disease, Werner and Ingbar’s The Thyroid, and he co-edits two other textbooks: Medical Management of Thyroid Disease and Thyroid Cancer. He is also the co-author of a book for patients with thyroid disease entitled Your Thyroid: A Home Reference. He is the past Chair of the Subspecialty Board for Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism of the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is an Editor-in-Chief for Endocrinology at Up-to-Date, and he has served as the Chair of the Endocrine Society’s annual Board Review Course. Dr. Cooper was the Chair of the American Thyroid Association’s (ATA) 2006 and 2009 task forces that first drafted clinical practice guidelines for the management of thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer. He also served on ATA sponsored task forces that promulgated guidelines for the management of hypothyroidism and for the management of hyperthyroidism. He is the past Treasurer and past President of the ATA, and the recipient of the ATA’s Distinguished Service Award, its Paul Starr Award, and the Lewis Braverman Lectureship Award. He is also the recipient of the Distinction in Endocrinology Award given by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, as well as the Endocrine Society’s Outstanding Scholarly Physician Laureate Award and the Outstanding Educator Laureate Award.

  • Research in the David S. Cooper Lab focuses primarily on hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer. Topics of recent published studies include the NTCTCS staging systems for differentiated thyroid cancer, radioiodine remnant ablation in low-risk differentiated thyroid cancer, and the link between race/ethnicity and the prevalence of thyrotoxicosis in young Americans.

          Dr Cooper is the only specialist that I can count on to personally and promptly return questions submitted thru my chart. His video visits are smazinly prompt, thourough and informative. I dont kniw how he manages but he seems to be a one man show and it makes everything consistent, concise and trustworthy.

          Dr Cooper gave me a lot of time and was very patient with me. He explained everything and even used a model and drew pictures to make sure I understood. I felt like he was genuinely concerned about me and about me being able to understand my condition. Not what I was expecting from a Hopkins Doctor who I was told is top in the field.

          Even though I see Dr.Cooper once per year, he is the best informed person to treat me and evaluate my condition. He also has the longitudinal experience and perspective to evaluate changes in my health over the past three years. No other medical provider can substitute for this because he first saw me at a critical time. Everything since then has been the best medical care I could expect. This is why I changed my care to Dr. Cooper and to Johns Hopkins.

          In 2023, I had numerous blood work, MRIs done. From an MRI, I was told to get a sonogram of my thyroid due to nodules on thyroid. I got test results but no explanation of possible Issue with thyroid. Dr Cooper took the time to explain everything to me and alleviate my concerns. I truly appreciate the time he took to explain.
