The Neurosurgery Pain Research Institute is dedicated to fundamentally transforming our understanding, prevention, and treatment of pain, particularly as it relates to neurosurgery patients.

Essential to achieving our goals is developing the next generation of pain researchers. Toward this end, we are establishing the Neurosurgery Pain Research Scholar Awards. These competitive awards are designed to fund students, postdoctoral fellows or residents for pain research training under the direction of a Johns Hopkins Department of Neurosurgery faculty member for one to two years.

Applicants from outside Johns Hopkins are eligible to apply provided that they perform their research in the Johns Hopkins Department of Neurosurgery.

Program purpose

• Attract trainees at multiple levels to pain research
• Promote pain research in the Department of Neurosurgery
• Transform the treatment of pain in neurosurgery patients

Awards

• Graduate Student or Medical Student Awards: $35,000
• Postdoctoral Fellow, Clinical Resident, or Clinical Fellow Awards: $60,000

In addition, all awardees will receive a $2000 allowance for travel to one scientific meeting

Funds may be used for the awardee’s salary and standard benefits, and/or for costs directly associated with the proposed research. Publication costs or administrative costs may not be supported by the awards. Use of funds to support salaries of technical staff associated with the project will be subject to prior NPRI approval.

How to Apply

Applicants should provide the following:

• A 4-page proposal describing the intended research, including rationale, significance and relevance to pain, preliminary data, research plan and expected results. Preliminary data are encouraged but not required for successful applications.
• A list of cited references
• A bio sketch (in new NIH format) including current support page
• A budget with justification outlining the planned use of funds
• A letter of support from the applicant’s intended neurosurgery faculty mentor, indicating merits of the project and willingness to provide mentorship and funding for project-related costs not supported by the award

Applications will be evaluated based on the qualifications of the applicant, the scientific strength of the research proposal; the relevance of the project to the goals of the NPRI and evidence that the faculty mentor will provide an environment conducive to the success of the applicant’s project and training.
