Dr. Maureen M. Gilmore is an assistant professor of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her areas of clinical expertise include Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.

At Johns Hopkins Children's Center, Dr. Gilmore serves as Medical director of the Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. She previously was the NICU Medical Director at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, and her early career was in Neonatology at Penn State University

Dr. Gilmore earned her M.D. from the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn. She completed her Pediatrics residency at the University of Rochester/Strong Memorial Hospital and performed a fellowship in Neonatal -Perinatal Medicine at Johns Hopkins. 

Her research interests include neuromonitoring and neonatal autoregulation, neonatal abstinenece syndrome, and patient safety.

Dr. Gilmore serves on the Perinatal Advisory Committee for the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and a member of the Maryland chapter of the AAP.

Research Summary

Dr. Maureen Gilmore is an attending neonatologist with over 20 years of involvement in NICU-based clinical research. Her primary research interest is in neuroprotective strategies for term and preterm newborns at risk for brain injury.  Dr. Gilmore is a member of the JHH Neuro-Intensive Care Nursery group, and collaborates with researchers across multiple disciplines including Peds Neurology, Peds Neuroradiology, Neurodevelopmental Pediatrics, Peds ID, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Anesthesia/Critical Care Medicine.  Clinical projects for newborns with brain injury include continuous use of near-infrared spectroscopy and arterial blood pressure monitoring to study cerebrovascular autoregulation; impact of time to initiate therapeutic hypothermia; MRI findings; and improvements in sedation.  Dr. Gilmore served as the JHU Site principal investigator for the NINDS-funded multicenter PENUT trial studying the effect of erythropoietin for neuroprotection in extreme preterm neonates, and with follow-up of neurodevelopmental outcomes beyond age 2 years. More recent collaborations involve multicenter trials studying extended use of caffeine in preterm neonates at term to reduce potential effects of intermittent hypoxemia (ICAF), and a NICU pictographs trial to reduce medical errors during order writing in the electronic medical record.
