About Jean Kim
Primary Academic Title
Associate Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery
Background
Dr. Jean Kim is a surgeon-scientist and Associate Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She also holds joint secondary appointment as Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. She received her M.D., and Ph.D., degree from University of Pittsburgh, followed by residency and fellowship training as Assistant Chief of Service at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Dr. Kim’s clinical and translational research area of interest is in the pathogenesis of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis. Her clinical niche area includes the management of patients with the most severe form of chronic rhinosinusitis: patients with sinus disease and hyperplastic nasal polyposis and severe asthma at Johns Hopkins Asthma and Allergy Center, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and The Johns Hopkins Hospital. She has an active basic and translational laboratory that studies the underlying mechanisms of airway epithelial dysfunction in sinus disease. Her work is nationally and now internationally recognized in the field of epithelial cell biology and allergic immune responses. She has held NIH, foundation, and pharmaceutical industry-sponsored grants to conduct her clinical, basic, and translational research.
She also has expertise in management and study of patients with autoimmune disease and complex sinus disease, and serves as one of the co-directors of the first-ever Sjogren’s Center of Excellence and the Vasculitis Center at Johns Hopkins. Thus, she has considerable experience in clinical trials in sinus and autoimmune diseases.
Dr. Kim is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of the International Forum of Allergy and Rhinology, the nationally #1 ranked rhinology journal. She has also served as study section reviewer for the Medical Research Council of the United Kingdom, the FAMRI foundation, JHSOM Institute for Translational Research, and JHU Clinician Scientist Awards.
Dr. Kim is an inducted member of the following honor societies: Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Fellow of the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy, and Immunology, Fellow of the American Rhinologic Society, and the Triologic Society.

Lab Website
Jean Kim Lab
- The Jean Kim Laboratory performs translational research in the area of chronic rhinosinusitis, with a niche interest in the pathogenesis of hyperplastic nasal polyposis. Studies encompass clinical research to basic wet laboratory research in studying the underlying immune and autoimmune mediated mechanism of polyp growth and perpetuation of disease. Human cell and tissue culture models are used. Techniques in the laboratory include cell and tissue culture, real time PCR, immunoblot, ELISA, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, gene array analysis, and other molecular approaches including genetic knockdowns. Approaches used in Dr. Kim's clinical study designs include prospective and retrospective analysis of patient outcomes and clinical biomarkers, as wells controlled clinical trials.

Actually I spent quite a bit of time with the internist going over all my information. She and Dr. Kim seemed to work very well together. There is still medication to take, an MRI to be done, blood tests to be evaluated and a follow-up visit in September.
